Setting:
Hahahaha...ha... ha... Ohgod. Okay, so! One Piece is a crazy world. This is what it looks like. It's divided into five main seas. You've got one for each of the cardinal directions each filled with islands, called the Blues. The Blues are divided by that giant strip of land called the Red Line, and the Grand Line, the fifth sea that is crazy as balls and runs perpendicular to the Red Line. The Grand Line is lined by the Calm Belt, a patch of sea that's completely calm. No wind, no waves, nothing. The Calm Belt is also home to the Sea Kings--basically ginormous sea monsters that could very easy swallow a ship whole. The Grand Line itself is divided into two sections. There's the first half which most people just refer to as the Grand Line which is pretty crazy. You need a special compass to navigate it otherwise you are SOL and will die. And the weather can change at the drop of a hat so good luck with that. Then there's the second half of the Grand Line that comes after the Red Line divide called the New World. It's like the first half of the Grand Line on ludicrous steroids. There is a good reason only one crew has ever sailed to the end of the New World. And let's not forget the White Sea! It's a sea in the clouds that hardly anyone knows about and there's very few ways to get up there. Yep. There's a sea in the clouds.

If you haven't guessed by now, the One Piece world is insane. And it just gets even crazier. Superhuman powers probably aren't all that common in the OP world as a whole, but you see a whole lot of them in the story. There's this awesome thing called Haki that people, usually only people in the Grand Line, can train to use. It's basically shounen fighting spirit that can either give you a sixth sense, or gives you something like psychic armor. There are also these things called Devil Fruits that, if eaten, grant the eater superhuman powers in exchange for their ability to swim. Devil Fruits fall into one of three categories: zoan or animal fruits that turn their users into animals, logia fruits turn their users into an element like fire, and paramecia is basically the catch-all THIS DOESN'T FIT INTO ANOTHER CATEGORY category. People are also just crazy fighters in this canon because shounen manga!!!

The world is currently in what's called the Great Age of Pirates started by the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Roger was a fun-loving guy who just wanted to sail the seas and, when he found out he was dying of some rare, uncurable disease, decided to sail to the end of the New World. Because that's clearly a good decision. Anyways, he and his crew did it and Roger was called the King of Pirates by everybody. He disbanded his crew, camped out on some island for a while, fell in love and knocked up a woman named Portgas D. Rouge. Then, when he knew he was going to die, he turned himself into the Marines. When he was on the execution platform, he said his treasure, One Piece, was at the end of the New World and that if people wanted it, they were free to it--provided they were able to get to it. Thus began the Pirate Age and ended the Pirate King's life. Twenty years later, no one's been able to get to it, and Roger's son Ace is executed just because he's his father's son.

Yeah.

See, the Marines are part of what's called the World Government. Basically the world rulers that preside over the rulers of individual islands. And they are corrupt as all get out. They hunt down pirates and people that disagree with them and are generally Bad People. There are a few exceptions to this, but they basically prove the rule. Also involved in the World Government are the World Nobles. They're basically ridiculously rich, spoiled people who delight in things like the slave trade and see themselves as superior to everyone else. Even touching one of them will get a Marine Admiral sent to an island to open up a can of whoop ass on whoever decided to fuck with the Nobles. There are also the Seven Warlords of the Sea. They're basically pirates who get pardoned for their gross acts of piracy so long as they make themselves Marine dogs. Basically terrible people that are allowed to do terrible things so long as they do different terrible things for people who are also terrible.

On the other side of the World Government, you've got the rest of the pirates! Who, again, are generally greedy bastards and bad guys. With the exception of a few crews like Roger's, Ace's, a man named Red-Haired Shanks', and Ace's little brother Luffy's crew, pirates generally aren't good guys. In the New World, there are four pirate Emperors, as they're called, that have their own territories and islands and keep the peace. Sort of. They're pirates, there's never much peace. Before his death, Ace's captain, Whitebeard, was one of the Emperors! And he is a Big Deal since he was frenemies with Roger and could fight him to a draw.

In addition to all this good stuff, there's also these things called poneglyphs. They're basically historical accounts written in a script that only one living person can read. They tell the True History of how the World Government came to be and they also tell of the existence of three superweapons. And that's pretty much all we know about them so far. It's one of the big mysteries of the series. It's implied that it's something horrible. Silver Rayleigh, someone who knows what they all say, mentions that his crew couldn't do anything about what they said when they found out about it, which is just all kinds of wonderful and horrible at the same time.

As far as major world events that impacted Ace, the biggest ones are probably his father's execution and his own execution! After Roger was killed, there was a manhunt for a Rogue since the Marines caught onto the fact that Roger was in love and acting fatherly. So Rouge, through sheer force of will, carried Ace in her womb for twenty months so the Marines wouldn't kill him. This eventually killed her in childbirth. After that, he was raised on an island in East Blue and became brothers with two boys--Luffy and Sabo. A number of things happened on that little island, including Sabo dying, but nothing in the way of world-wide events. Ace left home when he was seventeen, eventually joined Whitebeard's crew, and when one of his crewmates murdered another and fled, Ace went to track him down.

And then he got his ass handed to him and was turned over the Marines. He'd managed to spend years under Whitebeard's protection, but once he was in the Marines' custody they planned to have him executed and basically turned into a three ring circus. It was broadcast all over because they were executing Roger's son and starting a war with Whitebeard in the process. There was lots of fighting, Whitebeard was injured enough that he died there, and then Ace died too! So that's that.

... it's possible I'm missing something about the setting, but I think that's the highlights. The world is really incredibly detailed and there's a lot that's difficult to explain, to say the least. But for a general overview, I think that more or less covers it.

Personality:
Ace is a character with a lot of layers to him. On the top layer, he's a genial and polite guy. He's friendly, extroverted enough that he could be considered outgoing, he likes having a good time... he's basically a pretty cool dude to have around. Fun, even, if it's the right situation and you ignore the fact that he steals people's food. As for the politeness, he's always polite with people he doesn't have many dealings with, even if those people are his enemies. Ace is the kind of guy who says things like, "It's nice to meet you," to people he's going to fight.

Below the surface, Ace has got some other things brewing. One is a fierce loyalty to the people around him that he gets close to. There is very, very, very little he wouldn't sacrifice for someone he cares about. He's the kind of person that would probably defend someone he liked even if they were slightly wrong, just because of the principal of the thing. His good books are a nice thing to be in.

But if you fuck up, you are going to get fucked up. Ace takes betrayal very seriously, and not just because his crew is sort of known for dealing in revenge when their crewmates go astray. He takes things personally, and his fairly hot temper and repressed violent side means he's not afraid to beat the shit out of someone he once considered a friend if they done screwed things up. As Ace has Issues with a capital I, once you break his trust it's a very, very hard thing to get back.

Those Issues are things that Ace likes to bury deep down within him though. He suppresses a lot of his negative emotions and bottles them up, mostly so he's not a burden to other people. Because Ace? Ace has literally no self-esteem. He thinks he's worthless and undeserving of love. It wasn't until he was on the execution platform watching his brothers die for him that he was finally able to admit that he liked living and loving and being. Ace hates himself and the part of him that came from his father. He admits that if it weren't for his brothers, he probably would've killed himself a long time ago.

Despite those massive insecurities, Ace somehow found a way to let himself live and be happy while he was alive. But he exists in the tension between hating himself and enjoying life, and it's a hard tension to live in. At his death he was genuinely happy that he had been loved and the only regret he had in his life was that he wouldn't be able to see his little brother achieve his dreams.

So Ace is a pretty complex character, and it's hard to get into the nitty gritty details of his personality sometimes. Partially because he's a minor character, and partially because he's got these parts to him that seem like they would conflict. But they don't, and they somehow manage to mesh together into the tangled mess that is Ace.

As for his reaction to being in turtleland, he'd generally be chill about it. At least he'd try to look that way. He'd be torn between being grateful for a second chance at life, hating himself for being so grateful, and being sad because being on a giant turtle means he's separated from his family. But Ace is the king of repression and bottling things up, so he'd mostly be able to keep a good hold on everything. For a while, anyways. Everyone has a tipping point, after all.

Appearance: Image link!
Abilities:
Ace is a Logia Devil Fruit user which means he's got some nifty powers to him. He ate the Flame-Flame Fruit. This, in the simplest terms possible, turned him into fire. In his default state he's not completely human and he's not completely made of flames either. But if you try and cut him, stab him, shoot him, hit him, whatever... it just passes through him because he's intangible flame.

In addition to this, he can create and control flames, using them to attack and defend. He's got a number of named attacks (because this is shounen manga and everyone yells their attack names like weirdos) that do everything from shoot bits of flames like bullets to his biggest attack which creates a giant ball of fire that looks like a miniature sun.

There's also one more ability that he technically has, but it's one that he never uses, and that's called Haoshoku Haki, or Conqueror's Haki in the official subs, though I've got no idea if that's the translation the anime dub is going to stick with. Basically, Haki is a person's ambition/willpower/shounen fighting spirit!!! And in the world of One Piece it can be used in a few different ways. Conqueror's Haki is the only kind of Haki someone can't train to acquire. You either got it, or you don't.

When someone uses Conqueror's Haki what they do is they basically overpower the wills of other people and knock them out. Animals can also be scared or tamed using this power. It seems pretty impressive, and it is, but it's got a huge caveat and that's the fact that it only knocks out people who are more weak-willed than the person using Haki. The bigger the gap in power between the user and their target, the easier it is to overpower them. The smaller the gap, the harder it is. It's also a power that if you have it and don't know how to use it, it doesn't really come out unless you're in a bad situation. You don't just randomly knock people out with it.

We only ever see Ace use it when his little brother was about to die and he himself is ten years old, so it's unclear whether or not he's mastered it. I think it's fairly safe to say that he hasn't, as he didn't have anyone to teach him to use it until he joined Whitebeard's crew and by then he was already insanely powerful, what with being a Logia. So while it's something he won't/can't consciously use, it is dormant within him a should probably be mentioned.

Inventory: Ace'll just be bringing his clothes (shorts, belt, shoes, elbow guard thing) and his red bead necklace. He'll be horribly disappointed that his obnoxiously orange cowboy hat and knife didn't come with him.

Suite: One level suite in Fire, please and thanks! Ace doesn't need much space since he's used to bunking with a bunch of other people when he's with his crew, or being on a tiny little skiff when he's by himself. And with him being quite literally made of fire, sticking him anywhere but the Fire sector would feel wrong.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
Ace was quiet for most of the cart ride. It's not that he didn't have questions--there were lots of them swirling around in his head. But most of them were ones he knew most likely wouldn't get answered. What happened to his crew? To his brother? To his Pops? More than his own fate, the fates of those people he was leaving behind after he died weighed on him. So many people had come out to save him, and he'd... he'd gone and gotten himself killed because of his stupid temper.

He let out a ragged sigh, running a hand through his hair as flames licked at his shoulders briefly. And wasn't that a relief. After having his fire suppressed by sea stone for so long, the feeling of it roaring within him was a beautiful thing. Ace held out a hand and watched his fingers fade to flame, then back to flesh. He did it twice, three times. It was a poor substitute for what he really wanted to do. But letting loose and letting the fire rip through him until there was nothing left but a blaze was probably a bad idea. Maybe if there was somewhere he could go and not hurt anyone, and not hurt the giant turtle, he'd do it. But until he found out if it was possible, he'd have to content himself with flashing bits of himself between states.

When the cart stopped, it was a relief. Civilization, such as it was, was a welcome change after weeks spent in prison. It was a shame about the food rationing, though. Ace felt like he could probably eat an entire herd of cows. But he'd make do with whatever bits of food he could buy and forage for himself. His stomach growled at the thought. The idea of exploring whatever suite he'd been assigned to flew out of his mind. Food was a thing that needed to happen ASAP. Hopefully he wouldn't fall asleep in it this time.

(He did.)

Network:
A turtle, huh? [ ace sounds surprisingly calm for someone who has recently found themselves on a giant turtle. it's partially a product of the world he comes from, and partially the fact that he's been here for while by the time he's posting this. ] Is it a Sea King, or something else?

[ it's not intended as a subtle way of finding out if anyone from his world around, but, hey. if it does that, as well, that would be awesome. ]

Ah, I should probably introduce myself, shouldn't I? I'm Portgas D. Ace. It's nice to meet you all. [ a beat. ] So to speak, anyways.

I don't suppose anyone's seen an annoying rubber kid around. Kind of stupid, wears a straw hat, answers to Luffy? Or a giant man with a white mustache named Whitebeard? [ he's really hoping neither of them followed him into death. he's not sure how exactly he'd deal with it if they did. ]
